Five hashtags is now a rule, not a tip
In December 2025 Instagram began limiting the hashtags in a post or Reel caption to five. Its stated reason was the same advice it had been giving for years: a few targeted hashtags do more for a post, and for the people browsing them, than a long block of generic ones.
The practical change is that choosing is now the whole job. The saved note of thirty tags pasted under every post no longer fits, and the five that do fit have to describe this particular post, because there is no room left for tags that are only there for volume.
How the five are chosen
- Category tags. The broad tags your topic lives under, the ones people interested in that kind of content actually follow and browse.
- Precise tags. One or two that name what the Reel specifically shows, so the set is accurate and not just big.
- One reach tag. A single broad discovery tag. Under a five-tag limit it gets one slot and no more, because it says nothing about the post itself.
- Your language. All five are written in the language of your description, the way someone in that audience would type them.
Hashtags are not how most Reels get found
Most Reels reach new people through recommendations, which are driven by what the Reel shows and how viewers respond to it. Instagram search leans heavily on the words in your caption. Hashtags sit on top of both as a clear label, which is useful, but they are not a substitute for a caption that says what the post is about.
