How many hashtags should you use on TikTok?
By the ViralSharky team · · 5 min read
The short answer: three to five hashtags, every one of them about the video. TikTok does not stop you adding more, but more does not help, and past five the tags start to crowd out the caption text that does more of the work.
What hashtags actually do on TikTok
TikTok understands a video from several places at once: what is said, what is shown, the text on screen, the caption, and above all how people react in the first seconds. Hashtags live inside the caption, so they are one clear label among many signals rather than the mechanism that decides reach.
That makes them most useful when the rest of the video is unclear. A cooking video that never names the dish, a review that never shows the product label, a joke that only works if you know the niche: in each case a precise tag tells TikTok something it would otherwise have to guess.
What to spend the five slots on
- 1Two or three category tags. The broad topic the video belongs to, such as the cuisine, the sport, or the kind of skincare. These put the video in front of people who already watch that category.
- 2One precise tag. The specific thing this video shows. It keeps the set honest, so the video is not just one more post under a giant tag.
- 3One or two reach tags. #fyp and #foryou belong here, and only here. They say nothing about the video, so they never get more than two slots.
Does #fyp work?
Not the way the name suggests. Every public video is already eligible for the For You feed, and adding #fyp does not unlock anything. It is harmless as one slot, which is why most creators keep it, and pointless as the whole strategy. A set made of #fyp, #foryou, #viral, and #trending tells TikTok nothing at all about the video it is attached to.
Trending hashtags
A trending tag is worth using when the video is genuinely part of that trend. When it is not, the tag sends the video to people who came for something else, they swipe away in the first second, and that early swipe is the worst signal a video can collect. Relevance beats size every time the two disagree.
Match the language of the video
Write every tag in the language the video is in. A Turkish recipe with English reach tags sends TikTok two different answers about who the video is for. If your audience types a term in English even when speaking another language, that is the exception, not the rule.
TikTok is not Instagram any more
Instagram now limits posts and Reels to five hashtags. TikTok has no such cap: tags just count toward the caption's character limit. The advice lands in the same place, three to five relevant tags, but for different reasons. On Instagram it is a rule; on TikTok it is simply what works.
Put the caption sentence first and the hashtags after it. Only the start of a caption shows over the video, and that space belongs to the words that say what the video is.

How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?
Three to five, all relevant to the video. TikTok does not cap the number, but more tags add little and push the caption sentence out of view.
Does the #fyp hashtag help a TikTok get views?
No. Every public video is already eligible for the For You feed. #fyp is harmless as one slot in a set, but it carries no information about the video.
Should TikTok hashtags go at the start or the end of the caption?
The end. The start of the caption is the only part shown over the video, so it should be the sentence that says what the video is about.
